A fleeting history of hair transplants
Hair transplants were a groundbreaking invention that shook the world as being the first-ever treatment to hair loss. Baldness has been a struggle in many civilizations and dating even further back to our nomad days. when hair transplants initially emerged, they emerged as follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Although for its time extraordinary, FUT attained more flaws than one could brush under the rug. For some patients, getting their hair restored via FUT meant compromising on various aspects of the perfect aesthetic appearance.
FUT hair transplants have to surgically excise a strip of skin, and later stitch the wound back, to extract grafts. The strip is dissected to obtain individual grafts that are then inserted in the incisions made on the recipient site. The graft-extraction method is a lot more damaging than one might imagine. For one, the depth of the wound is sure to have an affliction of some degree to the nerves in the area. In some instances, numbness can be permanent, in others, it might last anywhere between four to six months.
The invasive technique of graft harvesting also leaves behind a conspicuously visible linear scar on the back of the scalp, which often limits the patient’s choice of hairstyles in the future around their acceptance of the scar.

The emerging of FUE

FUE was the silver lining for many patients who did not accept the non-material cost of FUT. Instead of excising a strip of skin, and inducing trauma in the area, FUE individually extracts follicular units. A punch is utilized to create incisions around every single hair root, and tweezers are then used to extract the follicular unit. This method of harvesting is not traumatic to neighbor tissue, neither visible scarring nor nerve damage whether permanent or temporary is a possibility.
